Achieving smooth relations between consumers and real-estate agents is something we?ve seen addressed on a few occasions already ? Sundaybell would be one such example ? but recently we came across an even more direct attempt. Specifically, Finnish Hakema is a company that facilitates the booking of appointments between real-estate agents or sellers and potential buyers.
Hakema?s appointment booking button can be integrated into the online classified ads posted by real estate agents or property owners, who can set their availability once and then let the service schedule their appointments. Potential buyers who click on the Hakema button can then schedule an appointment to view a property at their own convenience, whether or not it?s currently during business hours. Confirmations and reminders are sent to all parties involved via email and SMS, and buyers also get alerted if a property is sold before their visit, for example, or if the price changes. Both buyers and sellers receive a daily email summary of their bookings, and sellers can see an array of analytics as well.
Although other similar services already exist, Hakema has set out to go the extra mile with built in alerts, analytics and summaries. Time to do your part to further ease buyer-seller connections in the real estate world?

Never ever do business with Samsung India Software Operations
Back in October 2010 I was very glad to receive a mail from the people behind the Samsung Dolfin browser, who turned out to work from Bangalore, India, asking for my cooperation in making it better and even offering to pay me for it. Unfortunately, by now it turns out that they?re a bunch of fucking assholes who don?t do as they promise. This is to serve as a warning to others NEVER to do business with them.
It should be noted that the engineers are perfectly all-right and reasonable and can easily be talked to. It?s the fucking bureaucratic assholes in "HR" that are the enemy who?ve fucked up my life in the last year or so.
As I said, I received the initial mail in October 2010, and by the end of December we both had decided to continue with the job. They asked me to fill out some paperwork, and I did so in early January 2011.
And then I waited. And waited. And waited. I sent a mail in February asking how we should continue, especially because I had a lot of free time then and wouldn?t mind a job. I repeated this in March, and finally one of the engineers came back to me from his private mail address, saying he?d never seen such a bureaucratic fuck-up in his life (and for an Indian that?s quite something).
Anyway, to cut a long story short, at the end of August 2011 I was asked to start my work on October 1st, exactly the date I already told them I wasn?t going to be available any more. Of course this demand came from the HR fucker. An engineer intervened, and we were able to set a sensible deadline.
I received a secret prototype (and had to pay about ?50 in taxes, which later turned out SISO wasn?t going to reimburse), did my research, and discovered some bugs. As far as I know the engineers liked my work and it helped them to make Samsung Dolfin a better browser. So far so not too bad.
Then came the invoicing process. Before, I had already been warned that I?d have to pay 20% Indian tax, unless I got a PAN card, whatever that is, in which case the tax would be cut to 10%. I tried to phone the Indian embassy here in Holland about getting a PAN card, but it exclusively consisted of bureaucratic assholes, so I decided to give up, especially when my tax consultant let me know I could deduct the Indian tax from my Dutch taxes.
But this wasn?t enough, of course. More forms had to be filled out. I admit I took a break of a month here because I was just sick of the entire process. But in January 2012, two months after finishing the job and thirteen months after initial contact, I took it up again and asked some questions about the forms. I also sent test forms by mail with the request to look at them and tell me if anything was wrong with them.
This went on for three fucking months.
The last question was about a banking number I forget the name of, but that?s only used in the US. I suggested we?d use the international IBAN standard instead, but unfortunately their financial specialist was out traveling, probably to fuck other software engineers, and they couldn?t answer it. And couldn?t answer it. And couldn?t answer it.
And then, to top it off, early this week they sent me YET ANOTHER FUCKING FORM that I don?t understand and that needs all kinds of authorized autographs plus a detailed knowledge of the Indian-Dutch tax treaty.
Today, I decided to give up. I sent a mail to all my SISO contacts that made liberal use of the word ?fuck? in a business context, and decided to forget about ever getting my money. It?s just not worth the trouble. And I hope that fucking Ganesh fucking Patel of fucking SISO will burn in fucking bureaucratic hell fucking forever because he doesn?t fucking understand the fucking release forms.
Anyway, this is a warning. Never EVER work for SISO. You won?t get your money. Spread the word.
And fuck them.

The first experiments with plants genetically modified to repel aphids are under way in the UK.
Wheat has been engineered with a gene from a peppermint plant so that it emits a particular pheromone.
The smell is the alarm signal given off by aphids to warn of an attack by predators.
The researchers hope that this will act as a "no parking sign" to keep the pests at bay without needing insecticide.
This is the first trial of a plant deliberately modified to use pheromones to ward off pests.
The work is taking place at Rothamsted Research, the plant science centre in Hertfordshire.
Eight plots of land - each six metres by 6m - have been planted with the GM wheat in the past few days.
Aphids are one of the major threats to the cultivation of wheat in the UK and other countries.
Professor Maurice Moloney, director of Rothamsted Research, has described the insects as a "ten billion dollar problem".
'Proven' technique
The idea of creating a variety of wheat that could use smell to repel insects was first mooted in 1985.
According to Professor John Pickett, Rothamsted's scientific leader on chemical ecology, tests have proved the technique in the lab.
"The aim is to use natural processes instead of pesticides and address the public's concerns about pesticide use," he said.
The trials are being conducted behind security fencing to keep out animals and to guard against environmental protestors.
One set of wheat in the experiment is fitted with the peppermint gene only; another set has also been engineered with a synthetic gene.
The goal is to see if the plants give off a highly pure version of the pheromone, known as A-Farnesene.
Experiments have shown that the aphids' sense of smell is highly sensitive; the insects will not react if they suspect the pheromone has been released by a plant.
A further aim is to see if the pheromone attracts the aphids' main predator, the tiny parasitic wasp.
Negative publicity
Lab tests show that the smell has the twin effect of repelling aphids and luring the wasps.
One possible risk, raised during a briefing, is that the pests are driven from the GM wheat on to neighbouring crops.
The researchers say that existing wheat fields are protected by pesticides and wild plants have their own defence mechanisms.
The scientists are hoping that GM plants which cut insecticide use will help gain support for this controversial technology.
The science suffered a setback a decade ago amid negative publicity and public nervousness about GM food.
Britain's major supermarket chains do not stock GM food and approval for GM crops has to be given by the European Union.
Trials like this one, which are purely for research, can be authorised by national governments.
The widespread view among plant scientists is that the challenge of feeding a global population of seven billion requires genetic modification.
But they face a struggle to win over retailers and politicians not just in Britain but in the EU as well.

If you're a fan of Plex's media server software and Roku's do-everything hockey puck media streamers then today is your lucky day, as bringing the two together is now easier than ever. While Plex has supported streaming to Roku devices through an unofficial channel since last year, today it announced it's officially available in the Channel Store. That's not the only thing that has changed either, since a blog post indicates the new official channel brings a new upgraded UI and features like myPlex support, audio and picture support, and Direct Play of video without transcoding on compatible videos. Hit the Plex blog for a few more screenshots and details, or just turn on your Roku and add the app directly. Also, if a Google TV device is your preferred Plex client, that app has also just been updated with a few new bugfixes.

IOD Incorporated, a leading provider of integrated HIM solutions to hospitals, IDNs, healthcare systems and clinics, today announced it has developed PRISM? iRequest, a secure iPad application for patient medical records requests. This new tool enhances patient experience by providing an intuitive electronic method for medical records requests.
?We recognized the growth of the tablet and in particular the iPad as a means for electronic documentation and workflow processing within healthcare,? said IOD?s Chief Technology Officer William J. Sweeney.? By facilitating walk-up electronic patient requests of medical records, IOD continues to provide leadership in delivering HIM solutions that impact day-to-day healthcare operations ? and their patients ? in a positive way.?
The PRISM iRequest iPad application enables IOD?s industry leading PRISM platform to extend Release of Information (ROI) workflow to the point of patient care. This makes it more convenient for patients to request either copies of their medical records or discharge instructions, while making the request fulfillment process more efficient and seamless for the healthcare provider.
The iRequest application was built to supplement IOD?s ONC-ATB certification by providing a tech-friendly means for patients to request their medical records electronically via IOD?s patient portal. The application is well-aligned with the growing adoption of consumer technology in the healthcare segment, and deploys secure e-signing technology using a stylus directly on the iPad. Requestors must also produce a photo ID that is captured using the iPad camera to ensure the authenticity of the patient?s signature and protect patient privacy. Upon submission of the request, an order is automatically created in PRISM, IOD?s Web-based ROI management, tracking and reporting software, and an e-mail is sent to notify the requestor that records are ready to retrieve from IOD?s eDelivery portal.

'Coaching Boys into Men' an effective tool for stopping teen dating violencePublic release date: 26-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Male high school athletes' ability to recognize and intervene to stop dating violence -- the physical, sexual and emotional aggression prevalent in adolescent romantic relationships -- is improved with the intervention of some of the most important role models in young men's lives: their coaches.
A new study conducted in Sacramento, Calif., led by UC Davis researchers has found that a structured program delivered by coaches, called "Coaching Boys into Men," is effective for discouraging adolescent dating violence. The research is published online today in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
"The high school male athletes whose coaches delivered this easy-to-implement program reported more positive bystander behaviors, meaning that these boys were more likely to say or do something to stop disrespectful and harmful behaviors towards girls which they witnessed among their male peers," said Elizabeth Miller, a member of the faculty of the UC Davis School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics.
"Previous violence-prevention efforts have not generally included coaches as partners, yet coaches can be such important role models for their athletes," said Miller, who is now chief of the division of adolescent medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. "With the right training and support, coaches can encourage their athletes to be positive leaders in their communities and to be part of the solution."
In the United States, one in three adolescent girls experiences physical, emotional or verbal abuse by a dating partner. Promoting non-violent attitudes among teen boys toward girls is recognized as a critical step to reduce the incidence of violence in these relationships.
"Coaching Boys into Men" (CBIM) is a high school athletics-based program that seeks to reduce dating violence by engaging athletic coaches as positive role models to deliver violence-prevention messages to young male athletes. It is a national program created by Futures Without Violence, formerly Family Violence Prevention Fund, in 2000. For the program, the coaches are trained in the use of the "Coaches Kit," a series of training cards that offers strategies for opening conversations about dating violence and appropriate attitudes toward women with young athletes.
The study was conducted among over 2,000 young male athletes in 16 high schools in four urban school districts in Sacramento County, Calif., between winter 2009 and fall 2010. Eight of the schools were randomly selected to receive the program, while the other eight schools served as comparisons. Of the coaches approached, 87 percent agreed to participate in the study. The ninth- through twelfth-grade student athletes who agreed to participate were administered a 15-minute baseline survey at the beginning of their sports season, which assessed their attitudes about dating violence and behaviors toward adolescent girls. A similar survey was administered at the end of the sports season (the study included fall, winter and spring sports).
For example, questions sought to assess teens' perceptions of abusive behaviors such as "telling girls which friends they can or cannot see or talk to" and "telling them they're ugly or stupid." Responses were assessed using a five-point scale that ranked answers from "not abusive" to "extremely abusive." Additional survey items assessed the athletes' level of agreement with statements such as "If a girl is raped it is often because she did not say no clearly enough" or "A boy/man will lose respect if he talks about his problems." Youth were also asked about how likely they would be to intervene when witnessing various abusive behaviors, such as hearing a peer make derogatory comments about a girl's appearance.
The surveys also asked whether the athletes had witnessed any abusive behavior and actually intervened. The young men who had ever dated were asked whether they themselves had participated in any of 10 abusive behaviors including physical, sexual and emotional abuse toward a female partner in the past three months. Eighteen percent of the male athletes who had ever dated reported perpetrating any abusive behavior toward a female partner in the past three months, with verbal and emotional abuse being most common.
The study found that the young males who were exposed to the Coaching Boys into Men program said that they were more likely to intervene when observing abusive behavior toward a peer when compared with the control group of teens, while the likelihood that control athletes would intervene diminished overall during the course of the sports season. And the youth who were exposed to Coaching Boys into Men were significantly more likely to report actually doing something to stop disrespectful and harmful behaviors among their male peers, when compared with controls.
"There are too few dating violence prevention programs that have demonstrated effectiveness using a rigorous research design. This study offers important evidence on the violence-reducing potential of a practical program that can be integrated into school and community-based dating violence prevention efforts," said Daniel Tancredi, assistant professor in pediatrics at UC Davis and co-investigator for the study.
"This study reminds us that in order to prevent violence before it happens, we need to take advantage of the positive influence that coaches have in shaping young athletes' attitudes towards women and girls." said Esta Soler, president of Futures Without Violence. "We hope these findings will spotlight the importance of dating violence and sexual assault prevention and encourage other schools to implement similar programs."
The Coaching Boys into Men program is available for free download through Futures Without Violence (www.coachescorner.org). In Sacramento, WEAVE (a partner in this research study) is continuing to provide training and support to coaches in area high schools. The study was funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HONG KONG (AP) ? Hong Kong's elite elected a former government Cabinet member as the southern Chinese financial hub's next leader on Sunday, heeding Beijing's wishes and public opinion following a tumultuous, bitter race that highlighted public discontent.
Leung Chun-ying was declared the semiautonomous territory's next chief executive by election officials after securing 689 votes from a 1,200-seat committee of business leaders and other elites.
Leung bowed deeply three times to election committee members and others watching the vote after his victory was declared.
Henry Tang, who was seen early on as Beijing's choice before a string of gaffes and scandals torpedoed his already-low approval rating, received 285 votes. Pro-democracy candidate Albert Ho, who had no chance to win, got 76 votes.
Several hundred pro-democracy protesters gathered outside the polling station, but were prevented from entering by police officers manning barricades.
Many committee members were expected to vote according to the wishes of China's leaders. Leung's victory reflects Beijing's efforts in recent days to quietly signal that it was backing off from initial support of the deeply unpopular Tang.
Hong Kong, a former British colony that was returned to Chinese rule in 1997, is an unrestrained global capital of commerce with Western-style rights and freedoms not seen on the mainland. But it has never had full democracy, and Hong Kong's 7.1 million residents had no say in the election.
The tumultuous race has heightened many Hong Kongers' desire to directly elect their leader, which Beijing has promised could happen as early as 2017, although no road map has been laid out.
Tang, the son of a wealthy businessman and former financial secretary with a reputation as a wine-loving playboy, was never popular with ordinary Hong Kong residents.
His scandals added to wider public discontent, driven by a yawning rich-poor gap and sky-high housing prices that have stirred resentment of the city's billionaires, who control Hong Kong's economy and vast real estate empires, and their perceived close ties with the government.

Sky's already thought of that, and should have something to ease your pain anytime now.
Beta version of Windows 8 went to live on 29th February. Development team announced that it had reached over 1 million downloads within the first 24 hours. Considering this is a pre-release software, 1 million is an incredible start for Microsoft.
I believe lots of you are still experiencing new features.
Windows Server 8 is in front of us as a most current server operating system. Microsoft is positioning Windows Server 8 as the go-to platform for both public and private cloud scenarios. So most major changes for Windows Server 8 can be explored within Hyper-V 3.0.
In this blog post, I?ll cover about truly live storage migration that is one of the key features of Hyper-V 3.0.
Also I will publish a video version of this article in my next blog post.
Storage migration is one of the new features of Hyper-V 3.0. It helps you to transfer virtual machine VHD (VHDX) and configuration items to a new locations. While Hyper-V gets all bits to a new folder, Virtual Machine continues to run with all functionality.
You can accomplish this task using User Interface or PowerShell. Using PowerShell means we can try different various of actions. For example you can query all your virtual machines that meets specific criteria such as name, disk, CPU etc. and run storage migration for queried VMs.
Before dive in step-by-step, let me explain a little bit about Storage Migration background.
Storage migration is supported for both hard disk files, VHD and VHDX. As all you know VHDX is a new virtual hard drive format shipped with Hyper-V 3.0 and brings lots of new functionalities such as;
Supports disks much larger than 2TB (Current VHD restriction)
It can be mounted and ejected from Windows Explorer.
Larger Block sizes
Faster speed than VHD disks
Can be convertible to VHD and back to VHDX
Storage migration process creates a new virtual hard disk in the destination directory thereupon user initiates Live Storage Migration through UI or PowerShell.
Important part is during source virtual hard disk read and write operations, newly created operations mirrored to the new virtual hard disk. Reads are occurring from the source, writes are happening to both source and destination.
Then Hyper-V initiates copying virtual disks. If your storage array supports Offloaded Data Transfer, storage migration accelerate itself as taking advantage of ODX technology. Let me explain in more detail about ODX;
Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX) introduces a tokenized operation to move data on the storage device. The source file and destination file can be on the same volume, two different volumes hosted by the same machine, a local volume and a remote volume through SMB2, or two volumes on two different machines through SMB2.
ODX in Windows Server 8 allows handing off operations to the storage system that can perform actions with higher performance.
?
Once disk copy process is complete, Hyper-V switch VM to run on destination virtual hard disk. In case of a failure on destination side, there is always fail back option to run back again on source directory. And finally deletes source VHDs.
Now lets take a look how to initiate Live Storage Migration.
First, open your Windows Server 8 Hyper-V Manager and navigate related virtual machine.
In my lab environment there is only one single Windows 8 Virtual Machine.
On the right action pane click Move.
Move Wizard will ask you to choose Move Type.
Choose between ?Live Migration? or ?Storage Migration?. As you know, Live migration moves virtual machine and its related items to another computer running Hyper-V.
In this case, we just want to simulate storage migration.
There are three different choices on Move Options page.
Move all of the virtual machine?s data to a single location: Choose this option to specify one single destination location for all VM items such as disk file, configuration, snapshot, smart paging.
Move the virtual machine?s data to a different locations: This option lets you to specify individual locations for each VM item.
Move only the virtual machine?s virtual hard disk: Moves only virtual hard disk file.
That?s a screenshot from ?Move the virtual machine?s data to a different locations? option. As you already notice you can move VM items individually.
And this is from ?Move only the virtual machine?s virtual hard disk:? option. Only choice is virtual machine disk file.
Lets move with option 1.
Specify destination location for the VM. Be aware about available disk space on destination folder. For demo purposes, I choose one of my local disks.
Preparing to move.
To show you that this is a true live storage migration, I started a ping command within Windows 8 Client (VM) that will run through migration process.
You can also track migration process within Hyper-V console.
If you locate destination folder through windows explorer, you will notice newly created snapshot and configuration files. Also virtual hard disk file bits are growing.
It?s almost finished.
And Hyper-V deletes source folder items. During migration process, Windows 8 Virtual Machine was fully reachable and live.
