Internet Explorer 11 to support WebGL and MPEG Dash

Internet Explorer 11 to support WebGL and MPEG Dash

Few would say that consistency is good for its own sake. Microsoft certainly agrees -- it just revealed at Build that Internet Explorer 11 will reverse the company's previously cautious stance on WebGL. The new browser will support the 3D standard from the get-go, joining the likes of Chrome and Firefox. IE11 should improve plain old 2D as well, as there's hardware acceleration for video streaming through MPEG Dash. All told, Internet Explorer should be a better web citizen -- and deliver a speed boost in the process.

Christians tweet more happily, less analytically than atheists

June 26, 2013 ? A computer analysis of nearly 2 million text messages (tweets) on the online social network Twitter found that Christians use more positive words, fewer negative words and engage in less analytical thinking than atheists. Christians also were more likely than atheists to tweet about their social relationships, the researchers found.

The findings are reported in the journal Social Psychological & Personality Science.

"Whether religious people experience more or less happiness is an important question in itself," the authors of the new analysis wrote. "But to truly understand how religion and happiness are related we must also understand why the two may be related."

To identify Christian and atheist Twitter users, the researchers studied the tweets of more than 16,000 followers of a few prominent Christian and atheist personalities on Twitter. They analyzed the tweets for their emotional content (the use of more positive or negative words), the frequency of words (such as "friend" and "brother") that are related to social processes, and the frequency of their use of words (such as "because" and "think") that are associated with an analytical thinking style.

Overall, tweets by Christians had more positive and less negative content than tweets by atheists, the researchers report. A less analytical thinking style among Christians and more frequent use of social words were correlated with the use of words indicating positive emotions, the researchers also said.

"If religious people are indeed happier than nonreligious people, differences in social support and thinking style may help to explain why," said University of Illinois graduate student Ryan Ritter, who conducted the research with U. of I. psychology professor Jesse Preston and graduate student Ivan Hernandez.

The findings are also in line with other studies linking greater levels of social connectedness to higher well-being, Ritter said.

"Religious communities are very social. Just being a member of a religious group connects people to others, and it may be this social connection that can make people happier," Preston said. "On the other hand, atheists had a more analytical thinking style in their tweets than Christians, which at extremes can make people less happy."

Previous research has found a positive association between religion and well-being among Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims. But most such studies rely on individuals to report how satisfied they are with their lives or their experience of positive and negative emotions at a given time.

"What's great about Twitter is that people are reporting their experiences -- good or bad -- as they occur," Preston said. "As researchers, we do not need to ask them how they feel because they are already telling us."

Christians appear to be happier than atheists on Twitter, but the authors caution that the results are correlational and "this does not mean atheists are unhappy overall or doomed to be miserable," Preston said. "If religion improves happiness indirectly through other factors, those benefits could also be found outside religious groups."

Cheney: Obama 'a day late and a dollar short' on Syria | The Daily ...

Former Vice President Dick Cheney criticized the Obama administration?s handling of the Syrian situation on ?Fox News Sunday??in the wake of ?President Bashar al-Assad?s use of chemical weapons.

Cheney suggested the United States missed its opportunity, and was unsure if al-Assad?s use of chemical weapons justified U.S. involvement if the deaths of 93,000 people already killed in the conflict did not justify it.

?I don?t think it?s been well handled,? Cheney said. ?I will be the first to admit it?s a complex, difficult situation. I frankly think John McCain has it just about right. John and I don?t always agree on everything. We have had our debates over the years but I think John has pretty well nailed it. Now we are to the point where it?s hard to understand that it?s the use of chemical weapons that triggered this result. As John said the other day, well, there were 93,000 people killed not affected by chemical weapons. Where was the concern then? It?s not clear to me what the mission is here, or they understand the mission.?

?Is it strictly humanitarian?? he continued. ?Is it geo-strategic? Does the United States have a vested interest in the outcome? Are we potentially involved in some kind of proxy war with the Soviets or the Russians, excuse me, who are supporting Assad? I think it is important that Assad go down. I think ? my instinct would have been to support the opposition sooner. You had an opportunity, if you cared about it, if it was in fact in the national interest. You had an opportunity earlier to provide support without having to get American forces directly involved and they took a pass. Now they are going to do it. But the question is whether or not they are a day late and a dollar short.?

Cheney endorsed the idea of a no-fly zone, but said that move by the United States would present problems and the question should be asked if it is in our national interests to get that involved.

?Jack Keane said the other day on the network ? that from a military standpoint of being able to accomplish something objectively that might well provide success, the no-fly zone, is what he would recommend,? Cheney said. ?That?s not without potential cost, obviously. Syria has a fairly sophisticated anti-air capability, sophisticated ground-to-air missiles. So it?s a problem. But again, I think it?s important for the administration to come back and specify what is the U.S. national interest here? And seems to be the only reason you?re going is now you have evidence that they used chemical weapons and killed 150 people with chemical weapons, is that our national interest? And I?m not sure they got it straight in their own minds what our objective is.?

U.S. Government Denies Reports That NSA Listens To Domestic ...

Yesterday, a CNET story that alleged that the NSA disclosed during a secret Capitol Hill briefing that its analysts can listen to domestic phone calls ?simply based on an analyst deciding that,? got a lot of play in the tech and political blogosphere. Today, however, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a statement that denounces this story as ?incorrect.?

The CNET story was based on a comment by Rep. Jerrold Nadler who, according to the reporter, was told by the NSA that ? the contents of a phone call could be accessed ?simply based on an analyst deciding that.?? If true, the idea that an analyst?s hunch was sufficient to listen to domestic phone conversations would have been quite a bombshell.

According to ODNI, ?the statement that a single analyst can eavesdrop on domestic communications without proper legal authorization is incorrect and was not briefed to Congress.? ODNI states that members of Congress were only briefed about the implementations of Section 702?of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which ? targets foreigners located overseas for a valid foreign intelligence purpose.?

As ODNI stated before, this regulation can?t be used to target Americans. As many pundits have noted, however, the scope of these programs makes it likely that domestic calls and other communications will get caught up in the dragnet, too. The government also just needs a 51% confidence that the target of the surveillance is not American or a legal citizen.

Previously, the U.S.?s Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper, also argued that the recent revelations around the NSA?s PRISM program contained ?numerous inaccuracies? and that PRISM couldn?t be used to mine data and ??intentionally target any U.S. citizen, or any other U.S. person.?

Since publishing the original story, CNET changed the headline of its post from???NSA admits listening to U.S. phone calls without warrants? to ?NSA spying flap extends to contents of U.S. phone calls? and attributed Rep. Nadler as the source of the main quote. The main gist of the story has remained the same.

(AP) ? It looks to be a baby girl for Kim Kardashian and her rapper boyfriend Kanye West. Or does it?

The couple was keeping silent on Sunday in the wake of multiple reports that Kardashian gave birth over the weekend ? about a month premature.

But Kardashian's sister Khloe appears to have let a rather cryptic cat out of the bag on Twitter.

"I can not even begin 2describe the miracle that is now apart of our family. Mommy/baby are healthy &resting. We appreciate all of the love," she tweeted Sunday.

She quickly followed with a second tweet: "More info will come when the time is right! Thank you all for understanding! We love you all dearly! Overwhelmed with love right now."

Kardashian mom Kris Jenner linked to both tweets on her Twitter account, then wished West a Happy Father's Day.

The reality TV star's pregnancy was almost as anticipated as the royal pregnancy of Kate Middleton, who is due in mid-July. That's about the time the Kardashian baby had been due.

The 32-year-old has often been photographed since announcing she was pregnant, opting to continue to wear designer clothing. She told The Associated Press in April that she eventually embraced being an expecting mom after getting past "the awkward phases and stages."

The couple had initially kept the baby's gender a secret, but the sex was revealed earlier this month during one of Kardashian's doctor appointments on "Keeping up with the Kardashians."

News of the birth has been swaddled in secrecy. Representatives for West and Kim Kardashian didn't respond to emails and calls from The Associated Press, nor did any representatives for family members, friends and professional associates. And all of the weekend media reports on the birth were attributed to anonymous sources.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, West said he didn't like talking about his family or the arrival of his child.

"Like, this is my baby. This isn't America's baby," he said.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish riot police stormed an Istanbul park at the heart of two weeks of protest against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday, firing tear gas and water cannon and sending hundreds scurrying into surrounding streets. Lines of police backed by armored vehicles sealed off Taksim Square in the center of the city as officers stormed the adjoining Gezi Park, where protesters had been living in a ramshackle tent camp.

Iran's new president hails 'victory of moderation'

DUBAI (Reuters) - Moderate cleric Hassan Rohani won Iran's presidential election on Saturday with a resounding defeat of conservative hardliners, calling it a victory of moderation over extremism and pledging a new tone of respect in international affairs. Though thousands of jubilant Iranians poured onto the streets in celebration of the victory, the outcome will not soon transform Iran's tense relations with the West, resolve the row over its nuclear program or lessen its support of Syria's president in the civil war there - matters of national security that remain the domain of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

U.S. puts jets in Jordan, fuels Russian fear of Syria no-fly zone

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United States said on Saturday it would keep F-16 fighters and Patriot missiles in Jordan at Amman's request, and Russia bristled at the possibility they could be used to enforce a no-fly zone inside Syria. Washington, which has long called for President Bashar al-Assad to step down, pledged military support to Syrian rebels this week, citing what it said was the Syrian military's use of chemical weapons - an allegation Damascus has denied.

Relationship between Czech PM and aide at heart of graft scandal

PRAGUE (Reuters) - A corruption scandal rocking the Czech government involves power and money but also, at its heart, questions about the nature of the relationship between the prime minister and a trusted female aide. Jana Nagyova, who runs Prime Minister Petr Necas's office, is in custody, accused, among other things, of illegally ordering military intelligence agents to conduct surveillance on three unnamed individuals.

Mortar attack on Iranian dissident camp in Iraq kills three

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A mortar attack on an Iranian dissident camp killed three people in Baghdad on Saturday, police sources said, and the Mujahidin-e-Khalq (MEK) group said Iran was probably to blame, with Iraqi complicity. MEK said two of the camp's residents were killed and 40 wounded in the attack. An Iraqi died when a stray mortar round hit a residential complex for Baghdad airport employees nearby.

Bulgaria to replace new security chief after public backlash

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's Socialist-led government said on Saturday it would reverse its appointment of a powerful media figure as head of state security just a day after rushing it through parliament, bowing to public outrage two weeks after taking power. About 8,000 people rallied in downtown Sofia for a second day, chanting "Mafia!" and "Resignation!".

Hospital siege, blasts new Pakistan government's first security test

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Militants in a volatile region of western Pakistan bombed a bus carrying women students on Saturday and then seized part of the hospital where survivors were taken, in the first major security test for the new prime minister, Nawaz Sharif. At least 22 people were killed in a day of violence that started with an apparent separatist attack that destroyed a summer retreat once used by the nation's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the hills of Baluchistan province.

Analysis: Iran moderate's poll triumph is mandate for change

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iranian voters weary of years of economic isolation and tightening political restrictions threw down a blunt demand for change on Saturday by handing a moderate cleric a landslide victory in a presidential election. Having waited throughout Friday night and most of Saturday, millions of Iranians at home and abroad greeted Hassan Rohani's victory with a mix of euphoria and relief that eight years under hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were finally over.
