Brick Joystick ? Another gadget that claims to improve your mobile gaming experience

Last week I posted a review of the Invisible Gamepad Kickstarter project, which are easy to use stick-on gamepads for smartphones and tablets. I found that the Invisible Gamepad worked better than other stick-on joysticks that I’ve tried in the past (see related reviews at the bottom of this post), but it still lacked a [...]

Facebook comes close to IPO price

Facebook's stock came within pennies of its 38 US dollar (?24.97) initial public offering price for the first time since its rocky initial public offering more than a year ago.

Shares of Facebook rose 2.18 dollars (?1.42), or 6.2%, to close at 37.61 dollars (?24.71) on Tuesday. The stock hit 37.96 dollars (?24.80) in afternoon trading.

The world's biggest online social network has been on a roll since it reported stronger-than-expected earnings on July 24. Investors are especially upbeat about its fast-growing mobile advertising revenue.

Facebook's ability to grow mobile revenue was one of the biggest concerns in the weeks leading up to its IPO last year. Investors were worried that its ad business was not moving to mobile gadgets as quickly as its user base.

Facebook now derives 41% of its ad revenue from mobile advertising.

How to Avoid Becoming Part of "No Vacation Nation"

The US is known for being the ?No Vacation Nation." Not only do we get less vacation time that many other countries, we are more likely not to use the vacation time we have. Nearly ? billion vacation days go unused each year in the US.

People who don?t use their vacation time are more likely to develop heart disease and depression, and are even at greater risk of death than those who do. If you don?t have any vacation plans for this summer, it?s not too late to get away. Early fall is actually my favorite time of year to travel. Once the kids are back in school prices, crowds, and temperatures go down. Before you make plans, make sure you take the best kind of vacation for you by first looking at your day-to-day lifestyle.

When Life is Routine

If your life is routine, the days seems to blend into one another, or you find yourself pondering, ?Is this all there is?? you could stand to shake things up. St. Augustine said ?The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.? Read another page by traveling somewhere you?ve never been before. Vacationing in the same place year after year might be pleasant (as in boring), but it won?t provide much stimulation. It won?t make you a more interesting or interested person, either.

Meeting new people, eating different foods, finding your way around unfamiliar places, and taking different modes of transportation are all ways that travel is stimulating. If you travel abroad and have to try out a new language, even better! Travel forces you to use skills that remain dormant and boosts your confidence. If you stop pushing yourself to try new things, eventually your world and confidence shrink.

When Life is Hectic

Many people have the opposite problem?their day-to-day life is crazy and stressful. These people imagine they would benefit from a more relaxing vacation. The problem with forced relaxation is that if you?re used to a hectic life, a completely unstructured vacation with days of nothingness stretched out before you will be stressful. There is no point in white-knuckling it on the beach wishing you were checking your email.

A better choice for you might be a guided tour. A tour can provide enough stimulation to hold your interest, but not much stress since all the details and arrangements are left to others. There are tours for all price ranges, age groups, interests, and levels of activity. Guided tours can be as active or cerebral as you like. You can white water raft the Grand Canyon, volunteer to save turtles in Costa Rica, or explore the art of Italy.

If independent travel has always been your style and you really can?t see yourself doing a tour, you might want to dip your toe into the waters by signing up for a few organized day trips. You?ll find you learn more and stress less with a professional tour guide. No worries about driving, directions, or parking?all you have to do is show up. Leaving the driving to others can be a great relationship saver, too. Driving in a foreign country with your partner navigating can lead to some serious friction. (Ask me how I know this!)

When You Absolutely Can?t Get Away

If financial restraints or personal obligations can make going away unrealistic, try a ?staycation." If possible, check into a local B&B, hotel, or resort. If not you can sleep at home. But play tourist for the day?avail yourself of the ?must-do? sites and experiences in your area that you rarely, or never, get around to. Even a 24 hour staycation can leave you greatly refreshed.

No Vacation? Try Meditation

When you find you need to get away right now, but it?s just not possible, give yourself a mini-break anytime you need one with meditation. If you haven?t meditated before, you?ll have more success using a guided meditation or brainwave entrainment MP3 to get started. Then go someplace quiet, get comfortable, and listen, using a headset or ear buds. You should feel emotionally lighter, refreshed, and more relaxed immediately. Do as needed whenever you could use a mini-vacation.

While meditation is one of the most beneficial habits you can incorporate into your daily life, it?s still not a substitute for a getting away. I recommend experiencing the benefits of both by being part of the ?Meditation and Vacation Nation?!

Oil recovers to over $105 after earlier sharp fall

The price of oil recovered to trade above $105 a barrel Monday, having earlier fallen on the back of a sharp drop in Japan's Nikkei stock index.

By early afternoon in Europe, West Texas Intermediate, the benchmark for U.S. crude, was up 57 cents to $105.27 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 79 cents to close at $104.70 on Friday in New York.

Earlier in the session, the WTI traded as low as $103.87 as the benchmark index of Japan's stock market, the Nikkei 225, fell 2.5 percent due to the strengthening yen and worries about China's economy. However, a solid performance by European markets and an anticipated steady opening on Wall Street helped support oil prices.

Traders in all financial markets have a lot to digest this week. The main focus will be on whether the U.S. Federal Reserve will provide more clarity as to when it will start scaling back its monetary stimulus. The Fed has been buying $85 billion of financial assets a month in an attempt to keep long-term borrowing rates low and help shore up the U.S. economic recovery. A lot of that money has found its way flowing round financial markets and that's helped oil prices.

However, the program is widely expected to be scaled down later this year as the economy improves.

Oil prices have also swung to the tune of developments in China. Last week, they fell as China, a major energy consumer, decided to press ahead with painful economic restructuring and forgo another round of stimulus even though growth has slowed.

The price of oil broke above $100 on July 3 for the first time since May 2012, mostly due to falling U.S. crude stockpiles and increased interest from financial investors.

Brent crude, which is traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London, was up 64 cents to $107.81 a barrel.

Analysts noted the newly widening gap between Nymex and Brent. Over the past weeks, WTI had slashed off most of its $20 discount to Brent and even briefly traded higher that the London contract, partly on the back of four straight weeks of declining U.S. crude stockpiles. Now the gap again is above $2 in favor of Brent.

"It therefore appears as if the WTI bull-run is over for the moment," analysts at JBC Energy in Vienna said in a report. "Despite hefty stock draws, U.S. crude stocks remain well above the 5-year average."

Analysts at Commerzbank added said the Nymex contract had developed a "considerable potential for correction, which points to further price falls in the coming days."

In other trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.65 cent to $3.0098 a gallon.

? Heating oil added 2.15 cents to $3.0346 a gallon.

? Natural gas shed 8.6 cents to $3.469 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Samsung posts record profits for Q2 driven by Galaxy sales

Samsung, the largest technology company in the world by revenue, has announced a record net profit of ?4.5 billion for the last quarter.

The company said that strong sales of its Galaxy smartphones and tablets pushed the growth. In this quarter Galaxy sales have now for the first time overtaken iPhone sales.

"Entering into a typically strong season for the IT industry, we expect earnings to continue to increase," said Robert Yi, Samsung's senior vice president and head of investor relations.

He did however issue a warning: "We cannot overlook delayed economic recovery in Europe and risks from increased competition for smartphone and other set products.

"We expect to improve profit yields in the second half due to high-margin, differentiated components products, as well as gains stemming from increased smartphone and TV shipments," he added.

Despite the record breaking figure, which represent a 47.5 per cent year-on-year rise, operating profit was in fact slightly lower than analysts had forecast. Whilst a ?5.84 operating gain had been expected, ?5.57 billion was posted.

Commenting on the news, Markellos Diorinos, head of engagement management at mobile solutions firm Upstream said: "Companies are always criticised when they don't meet their forecasts, even if they achieve record profits. However, the fact that Samsung's mobile division is down 3 per cent quarter on quarter in a growing market is quite significant.

"Although Samsung has predicted slower growth for its smartphone shipments in Q3, this should not be seen as a predictor of its future success. In fact, it is still in good position to bolster its market share by making focussing more on its devices that cater to emerging markets ? where Samsung is currently the brand of choice."

Michael Chiesa gets first loss by tapping just before the round ended at UFC on Fox 8

Going into his fight with Jorge Masvidal at UFC on Fox 8, "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Michael Chiesa was undefeated. Now, he has a loss on his record that he probably will think about for the rest of his career. Masvidal won with a D'arce choke at 4:59 in the second round.

Fighting in his home state of Washington, Chiesa started the fight well. In the first round, Chiesa knocked Masvidal to the ground, and looked close to finishing the fight first with strikes, and then with a choke. Masvidal recovered, returned to his feet, and managed a few shots of his own.

Later in the second round, Masvidal rolled Chiesa into a D'Arce position just before the clapper that announces 10 seconds left in the round sounded. Masvidal squeezed, and Chiesa tapped right before the horn sounded to end the second round. The fight was stopped, and Masvidal earned the win at 4:59 in the second round.

Chiesa stormed out of the cage as Masvidal celebrated his win. There was bad blood between the two before the fight as Masvidal complained about Chiesa's beard and Chiesa said he wasn't happy with Masvidal's smack talk. Between the bad blood, and Chiesa tapping with barely any time on the clock, he will want that fight back.

Florida Gators likely still in running for Homestead receiver Ermon Lane

Florida Gators football coach Will Muschamp ? entering his third year at the helm ? has etched his own mark on the school?s program.

But one thing remains from the Urban Meyer regime: ?Friday Night Lights? ? an event started by Meyer in 2005 ? allows players from around the country to participate in a series of drills and events under the bright lights of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in hopes of gaining interest and a potential scholarship offer. On Friday, several elite players from South Florida who already have the Gators? attention will attend in search of more clarity regarding their college decision.

One player who planned to attend but had a change of plans is Homestead wide receiver Ermon Lane. Lane and his teammate, quarterback Maurice Alexander, were supposed to make the trip to Gainesville together but had a setback.

?As of now, I?m not going. Something happened with my ride,? Alexander said. ?Me or Ermon won?t be going. I wanted to go, but it is what it is.?

Lane, a five-star recruit by 247Sports and four-star prospect by Rivals and Scout, has narrowed his list to three schools ? Florida, Alabama and Miami ? but told 247sports he?s taking no more visits, one day after telling the website he has a hunch which college he will choose.

?I?ve got an idea, but I?m just keeping it until I commit,? said Lane, who wants to end his recruitment before his senior season at Homestead begins.

Since attending Nike?s The Opening event in Oregon during the first week of July, Florida has appeared to be the leader for Lane?s services.

Miami Central running back Dalvin Cook, a UF oral commit who also attended The Opening and has been courting Lane to join him in Gainesville, said he felt Lane and UF quarterback commit Will Grier of Davidson (N.C.) High developed a ?great connection? while playing together on the Alpha Pro team.

?I felt like [Lane] felt comfortable with [Grier],? said Cook, who spent some time on rival Florida State?s campus a week ago during the Seminoles? camp.

In recent weeks ? for what it?s worth ? Lane has used pictures of himself with Grier and with Fort Lauderdale University School cornerback Quincy Wilson as his avatar photo on Twitter.

Lane and Wilson have grown into close friends since being teammates on the South Florida Express 7-on-7 travel team ? so close they want to commit to the same school on the same day.

Wilson and Plantation cornerback Chris Lammons will end their road trip together this week in Gainesville after stops to Tennessee and South Carolina.

Wilson?s father, Chad, approves of his son?s decision to attend the same school with Lane because he is taking everything else into account when looking at prospective schools --- not just playing with Lane.

?He?s doing it for all the right reasons,? the elder Wilson said during Sunday?s Premier Athletes event at University School.

Other players in the Class of 2014 still planning to be in Gainesville for Friday?s event include Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna Prep defensive tackle and UF commit Khairi Clark, University School defensive end Richard Yeargin III, West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman wide receiver Travis Rudolph and FIU wide receiver commit Mike Boone of Baker County Senior High outside of Jacksonville.

Class of 2015 players expected to attend: Miramar cornerback Tyrek Cole, Miami Central wide receiver Da?Vante Phillips, Fort Lauderdale American Heritage cornerback Tarvarus McFadden, Coconut Creek Monarch wide receiver Calvin Ridley, and University School cornerback Rashard Causey. Miami Killian safety Jaquan Johnson and University School wide receiver Sam Bruce, both in the Class of 2016, also planned to attend.

JJ Cale dies; wrote Clapton, Skynyrd hits

LA JOLLA, Calif. (AP) ? Influential musician JJ Cale, whose best-known songs became hits for Eric Clapton with "After Midnight" and Lynyrd Skynyrd with "Call Me the Breeze," has died. He was 74.

Cale's manager Mike Kappus has told The Associated Press that the architect of the Tulsa Sound died Friday of a heart attack at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

The Oklahoma native cut a wide path through 1970s rock 'n' roll, influencing some of the most famous musicians at the time with songs that were laid back and mellow, yet imbued with a driving groove.

A former member of the Grand Ole Opry touring company, Cale never rose to the level of success of his admirers, but his fingerprints could be heard all over the genre in the 1970s, and his music remains influential.

Steve Jobs 'the Leonardo da Vinci of our generation'

Ashton Kutcher has compared Steve Jobs to Leonardo da Vinci.

The actor plays the late Apple founder in biopic Jobs, which details the entrepreneur's life from college dropout to successful businessman.

Steve died in 2011 aged 56 after suffering respiratory arrest in association with pancreatic cancer.

Ashton passed up the chance to meet Steve just six months before his death and explained on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno how he felt about this missed opportunity.

"I was working that day and couldn't go, and in hindsight I look back and think, I had the opportunity to meet the Leonardo da Vinci of our generation, and I missed it," he told the talk show host.

"I'll never forget the moment I heard that he died. I realised I'd taken him for granted, and taken for granted the contribution that he actually gave to society, and I actually had a real emotional moment."

Ashton also recently took to knowledge website Quora to speak about his role in Jobs.

The 35-year-old studied Steve in great detail in order to portray him correctly, even firing some of his own staff to see what having power is like.

"The idea of playing the role terrified me. The chance to portray someone who not only lived but who is still very relevant and alive in the zeitgeist seemed to be a once-in-a-lifetime challenge," he wrote.

"I loved what the film stands for. I think with the state of the global economy, inspiring young people to build things is vital. I wanted to remind entrepreneurs that Steve Jobs wasn't always 'Steve Jobs', that he struggled, that he failed, and that he rigorously persevered to build something great to improve other people's lives."

No Days Off: What Is Jay Z Doing At The #Facebook Offices Right Now? (Photo)

Jay-Z is more than making a few rounds out in the streets in between shows, and it seems like surprising his wife Bey wasn?t enough. Before hitting the San Francisco leg of the Legends Of The Summer Tour with Justin Timberlake tonight, Hov made a quick stop at the Facebook offices to visit Mark Zuckerberg and the team.

Miss Info: What do you think is happening in this photo? Is Mark doing handjive? Are Mark and Hov filming the greenscreen scenes of new Facebook sci fi spoof? Will that sci fi spoof be called Face Balls? (Will anyone besides maybe Eric and Jeff Rosenthal get that joke?) Is Mark wearing Roshe Runs or just really old leaning Cortez? Is that a really large mud mat? Where does all the Facebook IPO money go?

Doug Spero, a mass communication professor at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., wrote in a recent op-ed for the Monitor that he "couldn't believe the lack of balance in [TV news] coverage" of the Zimmerman trial.

We asked Monitor readers on Facebook how the media's coverage of the trial affected their perception of the case. One user summed up many of their sentiments well.

Jo-Dee Collins: "It didn't [affect my perception of the case]. It only affected my perception of the media."

Several readers spoke of what they saw as TV networks' push to increase ratings and profits.

Tim Irvin: "TV news media want ratings, because ratings mean profits. The best way they can do that is to sensationalize stories in a way that divides and conquers the masses, in a way that pits one half of ordinary people against the other. The elites ? including media elites, corporate elites, political elites, and economic elites ? can continue to stick it to the middle class as long as they can successfully get us to fight each other along the lines of race, gender, religion, and political party. They want us to hate each other ? it keeps people fired up about current events, keeps them 'rooting on their side' and brings more money to those who already have lots of it."

Gerry Bulger: "It showed me that the media tried to create a race war to improve their ratings. Absolutely disgusting how all the 'news outlets' gave [Al] Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and [others] a pulpit to preach hate and intolerance."

Keith Vaglienti: "I can't say that [the media's coverage] affected my perception of the case or the media. Mainly because I don't have much faith in the media to begin with. ? It is plain the media will lie to promote any agenda they support or simply to improve ratings so they can charge more for advertising."

Lee Woodward: "I would guess the American people were failed by the media because it was so overdone. Lots of other murder trials going on elsewhere ? black on black [crime], crime waves in Chicago and other cities. These do not get national attention and this should not have either. Some, but not all, media intentionally fan the flames of racism to try to meet some agenda they may have."

Russell Allen Miller: "TV news has been showbiz since before Fox News came along, and I?m not sure if returning to an 'if it bleeds, it leads' philosophy would improve things. Fox News has made things worse by relentlessly distorting stories to fit into an ideological agenda. It is an equal shame that other networks are indulging in the same airheaded baloney with an opposite spin."

Other readers focused on what they see as the decline in the quality and unbiased integrity of the TV news media.

Symmi DeFrancesco: "The media is killing itself. No one trusts it anymore and the government either. It's a problem."

Gail Seaton Humbert: "I ignored it. It was their new O. J. Simpson trial. What I hated was how the world could be coming to an end and they still only would cover that trial. Grrrr!"

Gary Chavez: "Just proves a liberal bias!"

Probe may cause issues for more than DHS official

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An internal investigation of President Barack Obama's choice to be the No. 2 official at the Homeland Security Department has the potential to become a political headache for former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Democratic candidate for governor in Virginia.

The director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Alejandro Mayorkas, has been named a target in an investigation for his role in helping a company run by Clinton's brother to secure an international investor visa. Congressional officials briefed on the investigation said the visa was for a Chinese executive. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly release details of the inquiry.

The DHS Inspector General's Office outlined the investigation in an email to lawmakers earlier this week. In that email, the IG's office said, "At this point in our investigation, we do not have any findings of criminal misconduct."

According to the IG's email to lawmakers, the primary complaint against Mayorkas was that he helped a financing company run by Anthony Rodham win approval for an investor visa, even after the application was denied and an appeal was rejected.

The investigation does not appear to have any direct ties to Clinton's tenure as secretary of state. Nonetheless, any hint of scandal or even the most tangential connection to Clinton is likely to become fodder for Republican super PACs, which have sought to discredit her record while she maintains a lower profile with private speeches and work on a new book.

The former first lady and New York Democratic senator has not said whether she will run for president in 2016. But Republicans have made it clear that until Clinton does make a decision, every moment of her tenure in government will be scrutinized.

Across the Potomac River in Virginia, the inspector general's investigation already has become a weapon for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli in his race against Democrat Terry McAuliffe.

McAuliffe is former chairman of GreenTech Automotive, a manufacturer of energy-efficient cars that received funding from Rodham's Gulf Coast Funds Management. The firm is one of hundreds of government-approved "regional centers" that pool investments from foreign nationals looking to invest in U.S. businesses or industries as part of the EB-5 visa program for foreign investors.

GreenTech was not mentioned in the inspector general's email to lawmakers. In a statement late Tuesday, the company said it was not aware of the investigation prior to the report Tuesday by The Associated Press and that the company had not been contacted by the inspector general's office.

Cuccinelli, Virginia's attorney general, has previously criticized McAuliffe for putting GreenTech's new electric-car plant in a Mississippi suburb of Memphis instead of Virginia when the Democrat served as chairman of the company. McAuliffe quietly left his role as the company's chairman after declaring his bid for governor in November 2012.

In a statement Tuesday, Cucinnelli said McAuliffe should answer questions about the EB-5 probe and his role at GreenTech.

Josh Schwerin, a McAuliffe spokesman, said the investigation does not involve McAuliffe "and we hope that it is completed in a timely matter."

In an emailed statement Tuesday, Gulf Coast Funds Management's general counsel, D. Simone Williams, said the company had not been aware of the investigation and was not aware of an investor visa application being denied.

Beyond those on a ballot or thinking of running for office, the existence of the inspector general's investigation is almost certain to impact Mayorkas' nomination for deputy Homeland Security secretary.

Were he to be confirmed, Mayorkas likely would at least temporarily lead the department until a permanent replacement is found for Secretary Janet Napolitano, who is set to leave in September and become president of the University of California system.

USCIS and DHS did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday. The White House referred questions to the IG's office, which said the investigation was in an early stage.

Mayorkas is scheduled to appear Thursday before the Senate Homeland Security Committee for a hearing on his nomination, but the top Republican on the panel is calling for the nomination to be put on hold until the IG's investigation is completed.

A Democratic committee staff member said the committee's chairman, Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Dela., was aware of the investigation and was looking into the case. Thursday's hearing remained on the committee's schedule.

5 Reasons We Love the Cleveland Browns - Yahoo! Sports

COMMENTARY | One could easily argue that no North American sports team has such a love-hate relationship with its fan base as do the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns have found memorable and even historic ways to break the hearts of the franchise's most devoted followers both on and off the field, yet we all come back each and every August hoping that the team is on the cusp of making all of the agony worth it in the end. That day hasn't come in that the Browns haven't won anything of note in nearly five decades, and it is for that reason that I routinely classify Cleveland football fans as the best in the NFL and possibly in all of American sports.

5 reasons why we love the Cleveland Browns #1: We know it could be worse

It is admittedly far from fun to watch a losing football team struggle to acquire wins year after year. That's a fact that isn't unique for Cleveland fans. Not having a team to watch at all is much, much worse, and that's a pain that fans of the Detroit Lions, New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven't experienced. There have been numerous essays, articles and even books penned about the Browns leaving Cleveland for Baltimore in the mid-90s, and there's little I can add to those pieces other than this statement: Nothing, not the most mediocre professional football one can imagine, has managed to eliminate just how grateful I am that the Browns exist as a functioning NFL franchise.

5 reasons we love the Cleveland Browns #2: History

Critics and non-fans often point out that Cleveland's football history is more about moments such as "Red Right 88," "The Drive" and "The Fumble" than it is about anything else. That's not how it is for Browns fans, though. We, instead, take great delight in knowing that Jim Brown, the greatest player in the history of the NFL, wore Cleveland Brown and Orange. We remember the Kardiac Kids, listening to Nev Chandler via the radio while watching games on TV, and even those Tim Couch Hail Mary miracles. So what if those moments don't include the Lombardi Trophy? These memories are ours, and Cleveland fans cherish them regardless of where the Browns are in the standings come fall.

5 reasons we love the Cleveland Browns #3: Loyalty

The Browns have been perennial losers who have barely flirted with .500 (minus that 2007 campaign) since returning to the NFL in 1999, but they're our losers, dammit, and we Cleveland fans aren't going anywhere. People who think that's silly or who giggle at such a notion must be either too young or too uninformed as a sports fan to recall the days of the Brooklyn Dodgers, a franchise that was about way more than just the guys who took the field. That team, like the current Browns, was an integral part of the community.

It's a difficult phenomenon to explain, partially because it's one that has only happened once in the past ten years, but Cleveland truly is a different city when the Browns are good. That type of atmosphere and loyalty is only seen in the world of sports. Would you really stick with your spouse if he/she broke your heart as many times and as painfully as have the Browns?

    One would hope not.

5 reasons we love the Cleveland Browns #4: Family

I've never, in all of my time on this floating orb, ever encountered a Browns fan who picked the team just because he or she felt like it. That's because you don't choose the Browns. The team is handed down from generation to generation to generation. My father roots for Cleveland, as did his parents before him. Brothers and sisters gather with parents, aunts, uncles and cousins 16 Sundays out of the year to both watch the Browns in action and also as a way to ease some of the pain that comes with following what is usually a team that is out of the playoff hunt before Thanksgiving Day.

The Browns, more so than any other Cleveland sports team, create bonds among family and friends, to the point that the team is a living and breathing entity in the lives of fans. Browns fans don't use "we" and "us" when talking about the team because they have some absurd view of how pro sports really work. We do so because we feel connected to the franchise in a way that those with no ties to Cleveland sports will never understand.

5 reasons we love the Cleveland Browns #5: Hope

"Hope is a dangerous thing," taught Hollywood in one very famous scene. Who knows more about that than Cleveland sports fans? The hope isn't that I'll one day see the Browns win a Super Bowl before they let me down one final time. It's that I'll be able to do so with my Cleveland family, either in the city while surrounded by thousands of fellow Browns fans, or in a living room with members of my actual family who have also been waiting and waiting and waiting (and waiting) for that blessed day to come.

The laws of averages and also the thought of there being a merciful deity somewhere in the universe leads me to believe that Cleveland football fans will have their day at some point down the road. That one magical February Sunday night will make this entire ride, and all of the pain that has come with it, well worth the trip. "The Cleveland Browns are Super Bowl champions."

Too bad we'll never get to hear Nev say that sentence.

Zac has been covering the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, New York Giants, New York Mets and soccer leagues for Yahoo! Sports since 2010.

Steve Jobs' Death Left Ashton Kutcher Emotional

Actor Ashton Kutcher, who plays the lead role in a biopic based on Steve Jobs, says he had a 'bizarre emotional reaction' when the Apple co-founder expired in 2011. This special connect helped the Hollywood actor portray the late tech wizard with more authenticity in his upcoming biopic Jobs.

"When Steve Jobs passed away, I had this bizarre emotional reaction and I didn't know what it was. I was like, 'Wow, why am I so shook up about this?' And I started thinking about all the ways my life was affected by this guy and began learning about him anywhere and everywhere I could," Kutcher said in a statement.

Steven Paul Jobs, who died on October 5, 2011, was an American entrepreneur, marketer, and inventor, who was the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc. The movie Jobs chronicles his darkest days, biggest triumphs, his dreams, hopes and passions and his aspiration to change the world, as well as question the impossible. PVR Pictures will release this much-hyped biopic across Indian theatres August 16.

Coastal Antarctic permafrost melting faster than expected: Arctic-like melt rates appearing in Coastal Antarctica

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Scientists have documented an acceleration in the melt rate of permafrost in a part of Antarctica where the ice had been considered stable. The melt rates are comparable with the Arctic and could preview melting permafrost in other parts of a warming Antarctica. In Garwood Valley, scientists found melt rates accelerated consistently from 2001 to 2012, rising to about 10 times the historical average.

Single Daters Suffer From Mobile Phone Anxiety Disorder | Julie Spira

Has the cell phone replaced the teddy bear to keep singles warm at night? Apparently so, as the need to sleep with or near your mobile phone is on the rise. No longer for emergency purposes, the cell phone now plays a key role in dating and relationships 24 hours a day.

From flirting to breakups, and texting to talking, a survey of 1500 singles aged 21-50 commissioned by online dating sites JDate and Christian Mingle provides a wealth of data about the relationship between mobile phones and dating.

Read Dating in a Texting World

According to their survey of mobile's impact on dating and relationships, 50 percent of singles believe they could be addicted to their cell phones. More singles (44 percent) actually check their mobile phones in the morning before heading to the bathroom to brush their teeth (19 percent), with 56 percent of singles 21-26, 46 percent of singles 27-34, 40 percent of singles 35-42, and 33 percent of singles 43-50 reaching for their mobile devices when they wake up in the morning.

    2013-07-23-jdatesurvey7.2013.png

Source: JDate/Christian Mingle: Mobile's Impact on Dating & Relationships

While this behavior was related to FOMO (fear of missing out), taking it a step further, 25 percent of singles 21-26 keep their phones in bed with them and over 2/3 of singles keep their mobile phones within at least an arm's reach of their bed. It's alarming that this so-called addiction results in 16 percent of singles actually texting while having sex. While the study didn't dig deeper to determine if single sent text messages during foreplay or in the afterglow of lovemaking, one thing is for sure; the mobile phone is the number one accessory of choice.

While this news shouldn't be alarming, I dug a little deeper and read that last year, the Los Angeles Times reported on this trend, and there's actually a name for this mobile phone anxiety disorder -- Nomophobia. Until today, I hadn't heard of Nomophobia, but it's a behavioral disorder for those who can't be without their mobile phones without causing extreme emotional stress.

As one who changed my phone from an iPhone 4s to the iPhone 5 the day it was released to avoid the stress of extreme battery loss, this data doesn't surprise me at all.

In the Los Angeles Times story, questions were asked including:

Do you feel anxious if your cellphone isn't nearby?

Does just the thought of losing your phone make your heart pound?

Do you keep an extra phone on hand, just in case your primary phone breaks?

Do you sometimes take it to bed with you?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you may be a nomophobe, and you are not alone.

So as singles continue to struggle with dating etiquette and response times for text messages, one thing is for sure, the rules are constantly changing and mobile technology and mobile dating apps are accelerating the pace and causing an increase in anxiety for many.

Do you sleep with your mobile phone in bed with you or close by?

    Your comments are welcome.

Atoms For Peace exhibition to take place during London residency

    July 22, 2013 20:18

The Stanley Donwood curated exhibit takes place Upstairs at The Enterprise

    Photo: Press

Atoms For Peace are set to stage a pop-up exhibition whilst their three London shows take place this week.

The Atoms For Peace Drawing Room has been created by the band's collaborator, artist Stanley Donwood, and will take place Upstairs at The Enterprise, opposite The Roundhouse in Camden, where Atoms For Peace play July 24-26 for what will be their first ever UK shows. The exhibition will be open from midday-8pm [BST] from July 24-27.

The exhibit will see the room turned into a gallery and a shop as well as a 'hanging-out space', featuring vinyl and 'live-printed' posters for sale, which will be made on a specially-installed silkscreen printing press. A handwritten note regarding the exhibition from Donwood states: "...At the moment I'm in a room full of Atoms For Peace artwork, merchandise, records and all I feel is trepidation and perhaps mild peril. But I'm sure it'll be fine."

Atoms For Peace will broadcast two of their upcoming gigs at London's Roundhouse via the new mobile app Soundhalo. The Soundhalo app, which was premiered by Alt-J in May of this year and is aimed at discouraging gig-goers from recording concerts on their phones, allows users to download high quality MP4 videos and audio tracks to their phones as the show they are attending is taking place. Fans are then able to download each track to a desktop or portable device, for 99p per track or ?9.99 for the whole performance. The band consists of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, producer Nigel Godrich and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.

Law Firms See New Opportunity in Detroit | Hawaii Reporter

Inside the abandoned and decaying manufacturing plant of Packard Motor Car in Detroit, Michigan.

Reuters -?With more than $18 billion at stake in Detroit's restructuring, big law firms and other advisers are clamoring to represent the city's many creditors - including some advisers not exactly known for municipal work.

The city, which filed the largest-ever U.S. municipal bankruptcy on Thursday, tapped high-priced lawyers from Jones Day, financial advisers from Ernst & Young and restructuring consultants from Conway MacKenzie, court papers show.

For creditors and related parties, there is clearly a lot at stake. That means bondholders, insurers, retirees and others are sure to be accompanied in court by platoons of lawyers.

Detroit owes more than $8 billion in bond debt, and the insurers likely on the hook for those costs have already retained big-name law firms to take their cases.

Federal Guaranty Insurance Co. tapped Weil Gotshal & Manges, according to a source close to the matter, who declined to be named because the information was not public as of Saturday. An attorney for Weil declined to comment.

David Dubrow, a lawyer at Arent Fox, confirmed on Saturday that he has been tapped by Ambac Financial Group.

And, according to the court's electronic docket, Syncora hired Kirkland & Ellis, known for its corporate bankruptcy work, while Assured Guaranty retained Winston & Strawn, and National Public Finance Guarantee Corp hired Sidley Austin.

Bond insurers will play a key role in Detroit's case. While a portion of the city's $1.13 billion in general obligation bonds are secured by city assets, about $651 million of it is secured only by the ability to raise taxes. The city's emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, has said he will treat that portion of the debt as an unsecured claim.

That classification, which has been largely untested in federal courts, is likely to be hotly contested and possibly litigated by bondholders or their insurers.

Detroit also owes $5.7 billion in unfunded healthcare and other benefits to retirees, and has asked the judge to form a committee to look out for their interests. The Department of Justice may also appoint a committee of unsecured creditors in the case. Both moves would mean opportunities for professional advisers.

The city needs to negotiate new labor deals with unions, and its pension funds are underfunded by $3.5 billion, providing yet more opportunities for attorneys to advise creditors.

Chapter 9, the section of the bankruptcy code that governs municipal bankruptcies, is attractive for advisers, provided there is money to pay them. Unlike in Chapter 11, where billing is subject to court and regulatory review, Chapter 9 allows bills to stay between the adviser and its client.

In corporate restructuring, creditors, judges and the Justice Department pore over fees line by line, and can raise objections to unnecessary or overpriced items. Over the past few years, the Justice Department has ramped up its policing of high fees and has required bankruptcy lawyers to disclose more.

In municipal bankruptcies, fees could be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act, but they do not need to be reported publicly in court.

"You're used to being in a world where you have to explain yourself, and suddenly you don't anymore," said a bankruptcy lawyer, who asked not to be named.

The catch is that, unlike in corporate bankruptcies, there is no mechanism under Chapter 9 to make the bankrupt entity pay certain creditors' fees. And corporate bankruptcies are generally more lucrative for advisers because there is often more money to go around.

But with $18.5 billion in debt, Detroit is an outlier among municipal bankruptcies, where advisers see the potential for high fees without the hassle of having to justify them in court.

    A New Frontier

In the past, only a small handful of professionals were known for having expertise in municipal restructuring. But a recent slew of Chapter 9 filings has yielded many new faces, and Detroit's bankruptcy will only continue that trend.

"Every time a case gets bigger, there are new players," said Richard Levin, a partner at Cravath Swaine & Moore who is representing the Detroit Institute of Arts in the restructuring.

Chapter 9 filings are rare, with only about 650 cases filed in the 75 years to 2012, mostly involving small municipal entities like sewer districts. But, the last three years have seen filings by the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Jefferson County, Alabama and the California cities of Stockton and San Bernardino.

And a concurrent lull in corporate bankruptcies has put strain on big restructuring firms like Weil Gotshal, which last month laid off 170 associates and support staff, driving professionals toward municipal work.

"Chapter 9 is not something I started out doing," said George South, a partner at DLA Piper who has become well-versed in the arena, representing creditor groups in the bankruptcies of both Harrisburg and Jefferson County.

    Plenty of Constituencies

The abandoned Packard Motor Car Company building that ceased production in the 1950's.

In addition to general obligation bonds, Detroit owes nearly $6 billion in revenue bonds and $1.43 billion in pension certificates. Even though the bond insurers are likely to be the ones on the hook, the bondholders themselves will also "lawyer up."

Subsets of the holders may even band together to form committees if they feel a united front would better serve their interests, providing yet another potential path for advisers.

A number of other large law firms, including Brown Rudnick, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and DLA Piper, are involved in the case or looking for ways in, according to people familiar with the matter.

Even if advisers lose out on big-money clients, Detroit's restructuring calls for a slew of projects and transactions that will require their own armies of professionals.

"There's all kinds of consulting opportunities," said Levin, whose client, the Detroit Institute of Arts museum, is at the center of a dispute over whether the city can sell the museum's art collection.

Orr, the emergency manager, has outlined in court papers his plans to create a new water and sewer management authority, transfer Detroit's Belle Isle Park to the state of Michigan, and restructure Coleman A. Young airport, which has not serviced commercial jets in 13 years but which the city must maintain to keep some federal subsidies.

Each of those moves will require lawyers, consultants and financial advisers to strategize the most cost-efficient execution, said Kenneth Klee, a Chapter 9 expert and bankruptcy lawyer at Klee Tuchin Bogdanoff & Stern.

"Chapter Nines require complete expertise in the area of municipal finance," Klee said. "If you only have bankruptcy expertise, that's not enough."

Eventually, hedge funds and other investment vehicles could find ways into the case, as Orr has stressed the importance of new investment, particularly with respect to the proposed new water and sewer authority, which could finance its operations with new bond issuance.

The case could be a boon for smaller law firms, too.

While large, corporate creditors are apt to tap similarly colossal law firms with whom they have preexisting relationships, smaller or locally-based stakeholders may opt to hire attorneys native to Detroit.

"There are a lot of talented lawyers in Detroit," Levin said. "I would think pensions and unions, for example, might opt for those guys."
