Former professional, current Golf Performance Academy instructor Abby Pearson named Portage Central girls golf coach

PORTAGE, MI ? Job commitments prevented Brandon Lemons and Kyle Wiborn from continuing as girls golf coaches at Portage Central High School.

For Abby Pearson, coaching and teaching golf is her job.

Portage Central athletic director Jim Murray announced Pearson, who possesses extensive collegiate coaching and professional playing experience, as the Mustangs' new girls golf coach.

"We are very excited to have Abby as our girls golf coach. Her golf background as a player and an instructor is extensive and Abby is very enthusiastic about getting excited about getting started," Murray said in a release. "I am confident the girls will really enjoy playing for her."

Murray said he's not certain that Lemons and Wiborn will continue to coach boys golf at Portage Central based on their work responsibilities.

"Both Brandon and Kyle did a great job and we are disappointed they cannot continue; however, their job commitments just do not allow them the time needed to coach," he said.

Pearson, who was the University of Tennessee's first All-American, played professionally on the Futures Tour and the Kosaido Asian Tour. She collected three wins during her professional playing career.

Pearson, a native of South Carolina, has served as an assistant coach at Western Michigan University and Ball State University, where she received a bachelor's degree in communications in 2003.

She is a golf instructor at Golf Performance Academy of Southwest Michigan.

"Abby has a tremendous passion for the game and enjoys teaching the beginner to the advanced player," her bio on the GPA website reads. "It is important to her that her students 'own their own swing' in order for them to reach their full potential ? with the right attitude and just the right amoung of knowledge."

Pearson is a member of the LPGA Teaching and Coaching Division and a Certified Golf Fitness Instructor through the Titleist Performance Institute.
