Some effects of the brutal beating Junior Dos Santos took at the hands of heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez Saturday night at UFC 166 were immediately evident to those who treated the Brazilian in a Houston emergency room after the fight, according to a report from Combate.com. The Brazilian outlet reports that hospital staff that tended to Dos Santos on Saturday night after his fifth-round TKO loss to Velasquez said that the fighter “did not remember much of the fight…and thought he was knocked out in the second round, when in reality the TKO came in the fifth round. The fighter also did not remember having talked with host Joe Rogan after the fight.”
Dos Santos was taken to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center Emergency Room after UFC 166 and was treated for cuts on his face and underwent a CT scan on his head to check for fractures and bleeding. The CT scan reportedly came back negative on both counts and Dos Santos was released early Sunday morning.
Dos Santos was dropped in the third round and appeared to be out before referee Herb Dean allowed the bout to continue and the fighter eventually regained his footing and fought on until getting floored again in the 5th round and taking a follow up shot to the side of the head, which prompted the ref to call a halt. UFC president Dana White said afterwards that he felt the fight should have been stopped in the third and that Dos Santos took needless damage over the next two rounds.
The former champ declined to be photographed at the hospital and told Combate that “The pain is only in the heart, for failing to have a good performance in the Octagon.”
